The Registrar of Political Parties has officially announced the appointment of Hassan Omar as the interim Secretary General of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
According to a gazette notice reviewed by the Star, Ann Nderitu, the Registrar, has invited any objections to the proposed change to be submitted in writing within seven days from the publication date.
The notice states: “The Registrar of Political Parties gives notice that the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) intends to replace the current party official Cleophas Malala with Hassan Omar as the interim Secretary General. Any person wishing to submit written objections regarding these changes must do so within seven days of this publication.”
On August 2, 2024, the UDA’s National Executive Committee (NEC) removed Cleophas Malala from his role as interim Secretary General, effective immediately. The NEC, led by party chairperson and Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire, determined that Hassan Omar, the Vice-Chairperson, would serve as interim Secretary General. This decision followed extensive deliberations in line with Article 8.2 of the Party Constitution.
The move came in response to an incident where Cleophas Malala’s supporters clashed with others at the party offices. This disruption occurred shortly after a faction of founding members announced Malala’s removal and the appointment of Joe Khalende as the new Secretary General. Party chairperson Cecily Mbarire indicated that the NEC meeting would further address the incident and outline subsequent actions.
