Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza has pleaded not guilty to all three charges brought against her by the Meru County Assembly. After the charges were read to her, Mwangaza firmly maintained her innocence, stating simply, “Not guilty.”
This marks Mwangaza’s third impeachment trial. Previously, she was acquitted twice by the Senate, in 2022 and 2023. Her first impeachment was resolved by a committee, while the second was addressed in a plenary session. Her current case will also be heard by the Senate plenary.
The charges against Mwangaza include gross violation of the constitution, gross misconduct, and abuse of office. She is represented by lawyers Elisha Ongoya, Elias Mutuma, Bridah Kimathi, Robert Mutembei, Edgar Busienga, and Collins Mwenda. The Meru County Assembly is represented by lead counsel Ndegwa Njiru, supported by Mwangi Ndegwa, Mwirigi Eric Muriuki, Mwereru Boniface Mawira, Antony Mwenda, Ngure Benson Kinyua, Baptista Muriuki Kanyaru, and Linda Nkirote Kithinji.
Impeachment sponsor Zipporah Kinyua, along with MCA Aurelio Murangiri Kiramana, will appear in person. The assembly’s legal team will present their case against Mwangaza before the entire 67-member Senate. Last week, senators decided that the case would be heard by the full Senate, rejecting a proposal for an 11-member investigative team. This decision was made with the belief that a plenary session would ensure a fair process for both Mwangaza and the assembly.
