Joy filled Tambaya PCEA Church in Mukurweini on Sunday as 95-year-old Ibrahim Mbogo walked down the aisle with his beloved, 90-year-old Tabitha Wangui Mbogo, 64 years after they first met and fell in love.
The couple shared with the media that they opted for a white wedding to symbolize their enduring love and commitment. Mr. Mbogo recounted meeting Wangui in the 1960s and revealed that although they were married under Kikuyu customary law, they felt it fitting to have a church wedding due to their Christian faith.
“We met and fell in love in 1960, do you hear?” Mbogo remarked in an interview outside the church. “We discussed it together and decided it would be wonderful to have a white wedding. We know we are legally married according to Gikuyu custom, but as Christians, we wanted to affirm our union in the church.”
Wangui shared her wisdom on maintaining a long and healthy marriage, emphasizing the importance of respect and the willingness to apologize for mistakes. “Women, you must respect your husbands. If you do that, you’ll live as we have,” Wangui told Citizen Digital. “Avoid wrongdoing, and if you do make a mistake, apologize and seek forgiveness.”
Mukurwe-ini MP John Kaguchia, who attended the wedding, encouraged residents to follow the couple’s example, highlighting that a strong family unit is the cornerstone of a healthy nation. “There is no greater gift than the gift of family,” the MP stated. “This family unit is what makes a nation thrive. I hope we can all learn from this couple that growing old together is truly beautiful.”
