Nairobi County’s Environment Chief Officer, Geoffrey Mosiria, has indefinitely shut down a kiosk hotel due to serious hygiene violations.
The kiosk, which prepares kebabs, sausages, eggs, and smokies for distribution to small retailers and hawkers near the bus stop, was found to be in a shocking state of uncleanliness.
Accompanied by public health and environment officials, Mosiria uncovered the appalling conditions at the kiosk. A video shared by The Star revealed filthy floors, dirty cooking grills, and contaminated cooking oil.
Mosiria noted a strong, unpleasant odor, the presence of rats, and an overall dirty environment that posed significant health risks. He mentioned that they had previously warned the owner to close the business for a day or two to clean up, but the owner failed to comply.
“Due to these findings, the kiosk hotel has been closed indefinitely until substantial improvements are made to comply with Nairobi County’s strict health and safety regulations,” Mosiria stated.
He urged hawkers and vendors, particularly those running eateries, to prioritize hygiene, as many city residents consume their food. Mosiria stressed the importance of everyone contributing to a clean and healthy environment in the city.
This closure serves as a stern warning to all food vendors, reinforcing the county’s commitment to maintaining high hygiene standards and protecting public health. Mosiria also encouraged Nairobians to ensure that vendors maintain cleanliness and to report those who do not.
This decisive action underscores Governor Johnson Sakaja’s dedication to public health and safety.
