Detectives are investigating a case where a businessman was followed and robbed of Sh1.7 million shortly after withdrawing the funds from a bank along Mombasa Road, Nairobi.
On August 1, the businessman withdrew the cash and drove to his home in Syokimau, where the robbery occurred. The gang broke into his car and stole the money from the boot, which he had parked at an apartment complex.
The gang trailed him for nearly five kilometers to Syokimau, where they waited for him to enter his house before breaking into the car and stealing the cash. They even visited the apartment pretending to be on unrelated errands while their accomplices stole the money.
The robbery was captured by security cameras at both the bank and the apartment complex. The victim reported that one of the suspects was seen on CCTV at the bank, waiting in line to withdraw money just like the victim. However, this suspect left the bank before the victim was served.
The suspects monitored the victim as he placed the cash in the car’s boot and then followed him to Syokimau, where they executed the robbery. No injuries were reported, and the victim realized the theft only moments later.
Athi River DCI head Wesley Kiprotich confirmed that they are following promising leads. The vehicle used in the robbery had fake number plates. Police have conducted visits to the scene and the bank as part of their investigation.
So far, no arrests or recoveries have been made. The police are examining whether the incident may involve an inside job, warning the public against carrying large amounts of cash. They note that thieves often track customers from banks to their homes or workplaces, and some criminals impersonate bank customers to identify targets.
The investigation suggests that the robbery could involve a network including bank staff, police, and other criminals, with some robbers potentially equipped with firearms, handcuffs, police radios, and various vehicles.
