Former minister Franklin Bett was involved in an accident on the Awasi-Kericho Road in Kisumu County on Thursday night and was immediately taken to the hospital for treatment.
According to police, the accident, which occurred around 7 pm on August 15 in the Karange area, also left Bett’s driver and two other passengers in the car injured. The crash involved Bett’s four-wheel drive vehicle and a tractor transporting sugarcane.
The accident happened when Bett’s driver rear-ended the tractor, which was moving in the same direction. It’s believed that the tractor was not visible to Bett’s driver because it lacked proper signage. After the collision, the tractor continued on its way, and police are currently trying to locate it.
Bett sustained a deep cut on his forehead, while the other occupants in the car, including two women and the driver, suffered minor injuries. Bett was first taken to Awasi Catholic Hospital in stable condition before being transferred to Aga Khan Hospital in Kisumu for further treatment.
Police have visited the accident scene and towed Bett’s car to the station for inspection. They are also in discussions with local authorities to address the frequent occurrence of accidents involving poorly marked tractors carrying sugarcane, especially at night.
In separate incidents, two people were killed in accidents involving motorcycle riders. The first occurred on August 10 along the Kisii-Kericho Highway, where a pillion passenger died after the motorcycle she was on was hit by a car. The second incident took place on the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway near Umash area, where a motorcyclist died after colliding with a stationary trailer. Police are actively campaigning to reduce the high rate of motorcycle-related accidents.
