The Taliban marked the third anniversary of their takeover of Afghanistan with a ceremony in Bagram, the site of the former U.S. military base. Abdul Kabir, the political deputy chief minister, delivered a speech during the event.
Afghanistan follows the Persian calendar, so the anniversary is being celebrated on August 14th instead of August 15th, the actual date of the Taliban’s takeover. This marks three years since the militant group assumed control following the withdrawal of U.S. and NATO forces after two decades of war.
Since seizing power, the Taliban have transitioned from an insurgent group to the ruling authority, enforcing their interpretation of Islamic law and striving to solidify their legitimacy. Although they have not been officially recognized by the international community as Afghanistan’s rulers, the Taliban have engaged in high-level meetings with major regional powers.
The Taliban’s leadership is structured like a pyramid, with the supreme leader at the top, overseeing the governance of the country.
