Media personality Willis Raburu recently recounted an inspiring story about how Citizen TV news anchor Jeff Koinange significantly influenced his media career.
The two first met at Mediamax, where Willis was an intern and Jeff hosted Capital Talk on K24 TV. At that time, Raburu was eager to get on-air but lacked support from his boss.
Despite his determination, Raburu encountered several obstacles and was ultimately told that his voice wasn’t suited for television. “Your voice isn’t cut out for TV; I don’t think you’ll ever be on TV,” his boss bluntly stated.
Fortunately, Jeff Koinange was nearby when Willis received this discouraging news. Overhearing the conversation, Jeff took the opportunity to encourage the young intern. “I heard what that man said, but don’t worry. One day, everyone will know your name. Don’t give up,” he reassured Willis in the elevator.
For Raburu, those words felt like divine intervention. He thought, “If Jeff is saying this… sometimes God speaks through people like Jeff.” He has never forgotten that moment and frequently reminds Jeff of it.
Their paths crossed again at Royal Media Services, where Jeff continued to play a crucial role in Raburu’s career, providing consistent support and guidance during his 13 years there.
Eventually, Raburu became one of Kenya’s leading journalists, thriving as a reporter, anchor, and host of the immensely popular 10 Over 10.
