The father of 17-year-old Spanish football star Lamine Yamal has reportedly been stabbed multiple times in a car park.
According to reports from Spanish media, Mounir Nasraoui was attacked in the coastal town of Mataró, north of Barcelona, on Wednesday night by a group of individuals he had encountered earlier in the day.
Catalan police have confirmed that at least three people have been arrested, according to the AFP news agency.
Mr. Nasraoui was taken to a hospital in Barcelona in serious condition but is now reportedly stable.
The incident occurred near the Rocafonda neighborhood, where Yamal grew up.
Earlier that day, Mr. Nasraoui reportedly had an argument with a group of people he encountered while walking his dog, as reported by the Spanish newspaper El Pais.
Later that evening, the same group allegedly approached him in a car park and stabbed him “multiple times.”
The motive for the attack is currently unknown.
A report on the sports website Relevo stated that Mr. Nasraoui is expected to remain in the hospital for two or three days under observation.
Lamine Yamal, Spain’s youngest-ever player, gained recognition at Euro 2024, where he was named Young Player of the Tournament.
The winger assisted Nico Williams’s opening goal as Spain defeated England 2-1 in the final in Berlin.
After Spain’s victory, fans gathered in the streets of Mataró to celebrate their young star.
Having spent his childhood in the town, Yamal later trained at Barcelona’s renowned La Masia academy during his teenage years.
