Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sissi met with Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in Cairo on Wednesday to discuss efforts to combat terrorism and enhance Somalia’s security.
Following their discussions, the two countries signed a military cooperation protocol. In a news briefing afterward, President el-Sissi expressed his support for Somalia’s fight against terrorism and its efforts to secure and stabilize the nation.
“I fully support your efforts in combating terrorism, securing the country, and ensuring its stability,” el-Sissi stated. Somali President Mohamud highlighted the significance of their meeting, saying, “One of the outcomes of today’s meeting, which I am very proud of and committed to, is the new defense agreement signed today between Somalia and Egypt.”
Earlier in the week, on Monday, hundreds of people gathered at a hotel on a Somali beach—recently the site of a deadly attack claimed by al-Qaida’s East Africa affiliate, which left 37 people dead and many others injured—to denounce the violence and call for stronger security measures.
