The Senate leadership has suggested that the impeachment motion against Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza be reviewed by a committee of 11 senators.
This proposal was made through the House Business Committee, chaired by Speaker Amason Kingi, which sets the House agenda. The leadership has recommended an 11-member committee to examine the charges against the governor.
However, the full House must vote to either approve or reject this proposal. If rejected, the entire body of 67 Senators would conduct the trial.
On Wednesday afternoon, Majority Whip Bonny Khalwale introduced a motion proposing the 11-member committee, which would include Senators Hillary Sigei, Abdul Haji, Wahome Wamainga, David Wafula, Gloria Orwoba, Karen Nyamu, Issa Juma, Eddy Oketch, Shakilla Abdalla, Betty Montet, and Beatrice Akinyi.
If the House approves the motion, the committee will have 10 days to investigate the matter and report on whether the allegations against Mwangaza have been substantiated.
Khalwale highlighted that this would be the third time the Senate has been asked to decide on this issue. Senators are currently debating whether to allow the 11-member committee to handle Mwangaza’s case. If the motion is rejected, the entire Senate will take on the investigation.
