The family of former IEBC commissioner Irene Masit has expressed their excitement over the recent calls from political leaders for her return from exile. They are eager to welcome her back and provide the support she needs to reintegrate into life in Kenya.
During the funeral of her father, Mzee Chirchir Masit, in Chepkorio, Elgeyo Marakwet County, local leaders, including Elgeyo Marakwet County MP Micah Kigen, urged ODM leader Raila Odinga to facilitate Masit’s return and secure a government position for her. Kigen, who is also a friend of the Masit family, emphasized that nearly all leaders present echoed the plea.
“As our ODM leader, you are aware of the details surrounding the Cherera Four and where Irene Masit is currently,” Kigen stated. He urged Raila, now working with President William Ruto, to ensure Masit’s return home, asserting that she should be supported for exercising her democratic rights as an IEBC commissioner.
Former MPs Daniel Rono and Jackson Kipatunui, along with Elgeyo Marakwet Governor Wisley Rotich, also voiced strong support for Masit’s return. Governor Rotich expressed sorrow that Masit could not attend her father’s funeral, and Rono reassured that there was no serious issue with her departure, believing she would return soon.
Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi joined the call for Masit’s immediate return, stating that since the election disputes are in the past, she should come back without delay. Sudi stressed that her role in the last election was legitimate and that politics should not be personal.
Raila Odinga, who attended the funeral, revealed that he had spoken with Masit recently, and she is willing to come back. He conveyed her condolences to the family and the residents of Chepkorio.
Collins Masit, Irene’s brother, expressed gratitude for the support received from leaders during the funeral and their advocacy for Irene’s return.
