Nation Media Group journalist Rukia Bulle has been named the winner of the 2024 Komla Dumor Award.
As a human interest journalist, she becomes the ninth recipient of this award since it was established in 2015 and the third Kenyan journalist to win it, following Waihiga Mwaura in 2018 and Victoria Rubadiri in 2020.
The award honors the late journalist Komla Dumor, and this year’s announcement aligns with the 10th anniversary of his passing. The BBC judges praised Rukia for her resilience, her focus on underrepresented voices, and her strong presence on air.
The judging panel for 2024 included Ehizojie Okharedia (Senior News Editor, BBC World Service), Magnus McGrandle (Senior News Editor, BBC News Channels), and Lydia Namubiru (Editor-in-Chief, The Continent).
Rukia serves as a reporter for NTV. Winners of the Komla Dumor Award will have the opportunity to work for three months with BBC news teams in London, across various platforms including television, radio, and online. They will also enhance their journalism skills through training, workshops, and mentorship from leading BBC journalists.
Additionally, successful candidates will get to travel to a chosen African country to report on a story of their choosing, which will be included in the BBC’s global content. Applications for the 2024 award closed on March 15, 2024, at 23:59 GMT (2:59 AM EAT).
