The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has called for an investigation into an incident at Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos, where a woman was filmed tearing a Nigerian passport.
According to local media, the woman, identified as Mrs. Favour Igiebor, was seen in the video admitting to destroying the passport, which reportedly belonged to her husband. Despite her confession, airport officials did not detain her and allowed her to leave with her two children.
NIS spokesperson Kenneth Udo confirmed the incident in a statement on Sunday, August 11, and added that the Comptroller General of Immigration, K.N. Nandap, has ordered that Mrs. Igiebor be summoned for further investigation.
Under Nigerian law, specifically the Immigration Act of 2015, the deliberate destruction of a passport is considered a serious offense. Section 10(b) of the Act clearly outlines that such an act is punishable by law, and Section 10(h) details the specific penalties for violating this provision.
Anyone found guilty of destroying a passport may face legal consequences, which could include fines, imprisonment, or both, depending on the court’s ruling.
