Liza Koima, who was accused of killing her husband during a domestic dispute four years ago, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison. During the judgment, Eldoret High Court Judge Reuben Nyakundi described the crime as a serious offense.
In his ruling, Justice Nyakundi pointed out that even after the incident, Koima did not attempt to contact the family of the deceased, Abraham Lagat, to seek forgiveness.
Lagat was killed on August 27, 2020, at their home in Kipkorgot estate, and Koima was arrested as the primary suspect.
In a surprising turn during her defense, Koima, a mother of two, admitted to her role in the tragic murder, claiming she acted in self-defense. She recounted how she struck her husband on the head with a blunt object during a struggle in their bedroom that day.
Koima explained that the altercation began when her husband assaulted her with a blunt object after they had been drinking. She stated that she defended herself by seizing the weapon from him and hitting him in retaliation.
She further disclosed that the conflict arose from her husband’s persistent demands for an unspecified amount of money he wanted for large-scale farming in Narok County. Additionally, Koima expressed fear of telling her neighbors about the incident, worried that she would be lynched for her husband’s murder.
