An intense Olympic boxing match ended abruptly when Italian boxer Angela Carini abandoned her bout against Algerian opponent Imane Khelif after just 46 seconds.
Carini was visibly upset after taking only two punches from Khelif, who had previously been disqualified from a major boxing event for failing testosterone tests. In frustration, Carini threw her helmet to the ground, refused a post-match handshake, and broke down in tears.
Despite the controversy over her eligibility, Khelif was declared the winner by the referee. Carini, however, insisted that her decision to quit was due to the physical pain she endured rather than a protest against her opponent.
The Italian boxer described the punches as unlike anything she had experienced before and expressed disappointment in not being able to continue. She emphasized her fighting spirit but admitted the pain was too much to bear.
Carini’s coach voiced concerns about her facial injuries, particularly a bruised nose. Meanwhile, the Algerian Boxing Federation celebrated Khelif’s victory on social media.
The match has sparked a broader debate about fairness and eligibility in women’s sports, with many questioning the inclusion of athletes with male biological characteristics in female competitions.
