Tusker FC goalkeeping coach Duncan Ochieng is currently in Finland participating in a goalkeeping coaching workshop with various trainers from across Europe.
The CAF C badge holder previously played for Mathare United, Tusker, Sofapaka, and Vietnam’s Song Lam, among other teams, and aims to enhance his skills in preparation for the upcoming FKF Premier League season, which begins next month.
As a result of his workshop commitment, the former Kenyan international will miss the club’s pre-season friendlies in Uganda, scheduled from August 6 to August 10, 2024, in Kampala.
Last month, Tusker signed Bandari goalkeeper Joseph Ochuka, joining Brain Odipo and Edwin Simiyu in the goalkeeping department led by Ochieng. The three will compete to impress Ochieng for the starting position following the departure of Kenyan international Brian Bwire to South Africa’s Polokwane City at the end of the 2023/2024 season.
Known as “Dunco” in football circles, Ochieng has made 43 appearances for the Harambee Stars and was the last goalkeeper to achieve a clean sheet in AFCON 2004, when Kenya defeated Burkina Faso 3-0 in Tunisia.
He began his career with Mathare United, winning the league with them in 2008, before securing two more titles with Tusker in 2011 and 2016. He also won the Cecafa tournament with the Harambee Stars in 2013.
Transitioning to a goalkeeper/coach role in 2018 after two decades of playing, he has focused on nurturing young talent through the Kombora Select elite soccer training program.
Ochieng follows in the footsteps of Jerry Onyango, the Bandari and Harambee Stars goalkeeping coach, and Iddi Salim, the Police FC coach. Onyango participated in a CAF Elite Instructors Course in South Africa on December 2, 2023, while Iddi holds a UEFA Pro License and is considered one of Kenya’s most knowledgeable goalkeeping coaches.
Ochieng’s trip to Finland has been supported by Farova Developmental Initiative USA, One Goal Consultancy, and One More Timer CBO.
