A court in Kenya on Thursday ordered the extradition of a man accused of murdering his girlfriend in the United States.
Kevin Kang’ethe is set to face trial in Massachusetts on first-degree murder charges for the death of nurse Margaret Mbitu in November 2023.
Mbitu’s body was discovered with multiple stab wounds in his SUV, parked in a garage at Boston’s Logan Airport, two days after her family had reported her missing.
Authorities say Kang’ethe boarded a flight from Logan to Kenya the day before Mbitu’s body was found.
He was located in Kenya three months later and arrested, but managed to escape in a minivan just one week into his detention.
Kenyan police initiated a manhunt and investigation, eventually capturing him at a relative’s home in Nairobi.
In addition, four police officers, two of Kang’ethe’s relatives, and a lawyer were arrested on charges of aiding his escape.
Prosecutors in Nairobi presented evidence that when Kang’ethe was apprehended, he was found in possession of items belonging to Mbitu, including her driver’s license, Bank of America debit card, and a visa card.
