Julius Yego, the silver medallist from the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, states that he feels no pressure as he prepares for his fourth Olympic appearance in Paris 2024.
Since June 11, Yego has been sharpening his skills at Team Kenya’s training camp in Miramas, southern France. He expressed satisfaction with his preparation, noting that his time at the camp has been excellent. “The first few days were tough due to the language barrier, as my coach is French. We had to rely on Google Translate until my coach arrived,” he shared.
He praised the high-quality facilities and feels ready for the qualification rounds.
Yego considers qualifying for the Games a significant accomplishment and feels relaxed heading into the competition. “I am under no pressure at all. After a mixed season, I see myself as an underdog going into the Games, which puts me in a good mental space,” he explained. “I am not among the favourites, and that is a positive.”
Yego believes that whatever unfolds in Paris will be worthwhile, but winning a gold medal would be an ideal farewell as he approaches retirement.
As one of the few veterans competing for the fourth time, he aims to enjoy the experience while targeting a spot in the finals.
In addition to his silver medal from Rio, the 35-year-old athlete boasts a world title from Beijing in 2015, a Commonwealth gold from Glasgow in 2014, and a bronze medal from Birmingham in 2022. He is also a record five-time African champion and a two-time African Games champion.
