Kalekwa believes Matano has the ability to lead Sofapaka to success once more.

Elly Kalekwa, the president of Sofapaka FC, has expressed confidence that Robert Matano can lead the team to their second FKF Premier League title next season. Matano made history in 2009 by becoming the first coach in Kenya to win the Premier League title on his first attempt with Sofapaka after being promoted from the NSL. However, the team has not secured the title since then, and Kalekwa believes Matano, the former coach of Tusker FC, can revive their winning spirit from 15 years ago.

Kalekwa stated, “When I have an experienced coach who has built his own team without interference and who despises defeat, I’m confident. What he achieved in 2009 with this team can be repeated. There’s a lot of hope for next season; we are definitely aiming for the title.”

He highlighted Matano’s extensive experience in the league as a key factor in hiring him on a one-year contract after leaving Tusker FC. “Robert Matano has a wealth of experience and a strong history with Sofapaka. Everywhere he has been, he has made a significant impact, starting with our promotion to the Premier League and winning the title in the same year,” Kalekwa emphasized.

Kalekwa also noted that Sofapaka had consistently finished in the top four until 2016, and although they faced challenges in recent years, they have not completely fallen from grace. “Operating without a shirt sponsor has been difficult for us, but we hope to secure sponsorship that will help us return to being one of the top teams,” he concluded.

Last season, Sofapaka narrowly avoided relegation, finishing 16th out of 18 teams, and managed to retain their status by defeating Naivas FC 2-0 on aggregate in the promotion/relegation play-off.
