A group of hardline supporters of Iran’s government gathered at the University of Tehran on Wednesday to protest the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of Hamas. Haniyeh was killed in a missile strike in Tehran early Wednesday morning, just hours after attending the inauguration of Iran’s new president.
His death has sparked threats of retaliation against Israel. The Israeli government has not yet commented on the incident, which appears to be another bold operation targeting its adversaries worldwide.
Student Amir Hossein Rahemi stated, “Iran is hospitable and it must definitely give a decisive response to the assassination of its guest attending a formal ceremony. This is necessary for its security and peace.” He emphasized that no country should “have the courage to kill an official guest of another country inside its territory, in its capital.”
The assassination comes at a critical moment in the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. Haniyeh had been participating in internationally-brokered ceasefire talks for the Palestinian enclave. His killing in Tehran raises the risk of the conflict escalating into a regional war.
Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, declared on Wednesday that avenging Haniyeh’s assassination is “Tehran’s duty,” given that it took place in the Iranian capital.
