Health Cabinet Secretary nominee Deborah Barasa has pledged to restore the Linda Mama program if she is confirmed by the vetting panel.
During her appearance before the National Assembly Committee on Appointments on Thursday, Dr. Barasa, who has personally benefited from the Linda Mama program, emphasized her commitment to working with all stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition as the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) is introduced.
The Linda Mama program, part of the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) and set to be replaced by SHIF, provides comprehensive maternity coverage for 12 months. This includes ante-natal visits, deliveries, post-natal care, and newborn care.
Dr. Barasa reassured that she would develop a transition plan to integrate the Linda Mama program into the new SHIF framework, addressing any potential gaps during the transition period. “I am a beneficiary of Linda Mama, as is my daughter. I will ensure it remains a key part of the program under SHIF,” she stated.
She also endorsed the establishment of a national health service commission, which health unions have long advocated for. This commission would centralize healthcare management and address ongoing sector issues.
Additionally, Dr. Barasa highlighted the need for effective public sensitization about SHIF to facilitate the transition from NHIF. According to the latest Ministry data, 464,263 Kenyans have registered for SHIF out of a target of 15 million. “We need to enhance communication with the public to increase awareness and acceptance of SHIF,” she said.
