The government has introduced plans to tax churches if the proposed Religious Organizations Bill, 2024, is enacted. Reports indicate that the bill requires all churches and religious groups to annually submit their financial records to the government.
The draft bill suggests creating a Religious Affairs Commission to oversee religious activities, including monitoring congregant numbers, financial reports, accounts, and funds received by the ministry.
The bill specifies, “Any religious institution that files its returns late shall incur a penalty for late filing as prescribed.”
Pastor Ng’ang’a, a well-known religious leader, expressed his dissatisfaction with the bill. In a viral video online, Ng’ang’a addressed his congregation, condemning the government’s plan to tax churches. He argued that it is unfair to tax religious institutions that mainly rely on offerings and donations from well-wishers.
Ng’ang’a accused the government of trying to exploit churches under the pretense of taxation, while other establishments, like clubs, are exempt.
