Dancehall artist Vybz Kartel has been released from prison after serving 13 years for a murder conviction.
Jamaica’s Court of Appeal denied a retrial for Vybz Kartel, citing his declining health and the psychological and financial burdens on him.
His defense highlighted his severe condition, including a swollen neck and face, which had worsened over the years.
Kartel’s release has sparked jubilation among his fans and supporters worldwide.
The Court of Appeal ruled unanimously to free Kartel and his co-accused, Shawn ‘Storm’ Campbell, Andre St John, and Kahira Jones.
The decision was influenced by several factors, including the unavailability of witnesses and trial exhibits, as well as Kartel’s deteriorating health.
The court found that the prosecution did not adequately account for the availability of its witnesses and that several trial exhibits were either missing or unaccounted for.
Additionally, the substantial resources used during the initial trial were considered a significant burden on the court system.
The release of Vybz Kartel has been met with widespread jubilation. Fans gathered outside the Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre in downtown Kingston, chanting “Free World Boss” as they awaited his release. The police and military had cordoned off the area to manage the large crowd and ensure security.
