Content creator and comedian Oliver Otieno, known as YY, has revealed that earning money from YouTube is no longer as feasible as it once was, making it difficult for content creators to rely solely on the platform for their livelihoods.
In his remarks, the former Churchill Show comedian detailed the expenses involved in producing a high-quality video. He noted that at least Sh60,000 is needed just for equipment rental for a proper shoot.
“For example, if you need three cameras, renting each one costs Sh6,000, totaling Sh18,000. Additionally, a battery mount for all three cameras costs Sh6,000, two studio lights will set you back Sh5,000, and if your production is larger, you’ll need even more lights. A Zoom Recorder costs about Sh6,500, along with tripods, lenses, and transportation. Therefore, you could easily spend at least Sh60,000 in one day, not including the venue rental for filming,” YY explained.
He also emphasized that labor costs are another significant factor in content creation. According to YY, a content creator needs around 2 million views to earn about Sh100,000.
“You also have to consider feeding your crew. Overall, you will need at least Sh100,000 to produce one episode of your YouTube content. To make approximately Sh100,000 from a single video, you must achieve around two million views,” YY said.
Furthermore, YY encouraged artists to pursue collaborations in their content creation efforts.
“This is why I urge artists to be open to collaboration. By working together, we can help each other build our brands, attract sponsorships, and engage brand clients. Relying solely on YouTube income isn’t a viable strategy,” he added.
