Despite denouncing the ANC and leading the MK to a third-place finish in the parliamentary elections, former president Jacob Zuma maintained that he was still a member of the ANC.
The party formalized his expulsion on Monday, with the ANC Secretary-General, Fikile Mbalula, criticizing Zuma’s actions and attitude.
“We don’t understand why you formed a new party and then argue for your ANC membership, when you consciously decided to leave the ANC. You have impugned the integrity of the party,” Mbalula said during a press conference.
“You have caused significant damage, bringing our support below 50%, and we are now grappling with the consequences of your actions. We are dealing with the fallout from Jacob Zuma’s decisions.” Zuma, who joined the ANC Youth League in 1959 and rose to become the party leader, retained considerable political influence after leaving office.
“No matter the rank, if you break the rules and the constitution, you must face the consequences. We have a responsibility to maintain discipline within the party, and you will be subjected to the ANC disciplinary process. We never expected to deal with a situation where a former president would be subjected to the Disciplinary Committee (DC),” Mbalula added.
