A three-judge bench will today, Wednesday, deliver a ruling in a case where survivors of the April 2, 2015, attack at Garissa University have sued the state for negligence. The students, who sustained injuries during the attack, along with their parents, have sought government compensation, alleging that the state had prior information and intelligence about the terror attack but failed to take action.
They are seeking compensation for psychological trauma and medical expenses incurred due to the attack. Over 33 former students claim that the state’s delay in rescue operations contributed to the injuries of the victims and the deaths of 147 young students.
In their 2019 petition, the complainants also contend that the army was deployed unlawfully during the attack, leading to uncoordinated efforts and a significant loss of life.
The state has responded by asserting that there was no specific and actionable intelligence available.
