In a show of solidarity, a group of Mt. Kenya leaders has come forward to defend Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua amidst growing rumors of an impeachment plot. The leaders emphasized the need for unity and stability within the government and vowed to counter any efforts to remove the Deputy President from office.
Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba asserted that they would not allow the Deputy President to be victimized or harassed. She accused those behind the impeachment plot of trying to distract the public from more pressing issues in Kenya. “They are just looking for a reason to divert attention from the ongoing protests in Kenya so they can target individuals,” she said. “We are ready for those raising impeachment claims against the Deputy President. We will not allow anyone to victimize others for defending and representing their community.”
Nominated MP Sabina Chege also expressed her support for DP Gachagua, firmly standing by his side. She noted that it is too early to consider impeachment claims against Ruto’s deputy, adding that if President Ruto has any issues with his deputy, he should address them publicly with Kenyans. “The priorities of this government are misplaced. Why consider impeachment instead of addressing the real problems facing Kenyans?” she questioned.
Embakasi North MP James Gakuya, a close ally of Gachagua, criticized a Kiambu MP for leading the impeachment effort by spearheading the collection of signatures. Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, another vocal supporter of Gachagua, challenged those behind the impeachment plot, saying they would face a tough battle. Kahiga described any plans to remove the Deputy President from office as unfortunate and baseless, stating that the accusations against Gachagua are frivolous. “If anyone thinks this is the way to go, we tell them to bring it on, and we will deal with it when the time comes,” he declared. “The country needs stability. We have already lost two years, one due to Gen Z demonstrations. We need to restore calm and address issues concerning our Cabinet Secretaries.”
Their intervention comes as the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) intensifies its investigation into allegations that politicians are funding the Gen Z protests. On Tuesday, three top aides to Gachagua were questioned in connection to the protests, a move some political commentators view as an attempt to target the Deputy President politically.
