Junior Starlets forward Serenge lured by scholarship, to join Zetech after World Cup

Junior Starlets forward Marion Serenge is set to join FKF Women Premier League team Zetech Sparks after participating in the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup, which is scheduled from October 16 to November 3 in the Dominican Republic.

Serenge, who was awarded the LG/SJAK Sports Personality of the Month for June, played a crucial role in helping Kenya secure a World Cup spot during the two-leg match against Burundi.

In a conversation with Citizen Digital, Zetech Sparks’ coach Bernard Kitolo Nzioki confirmed that he has spoken with Serenge’s family, who are supportive of her joining the team for a scholarship opportunity.

“We have been in discussions with Marion and her father, Fred Serenge, a former international player. We have decided that she will join our team right after the U17 World Cup concludes. Although she is expected to take her KCSE exams this year, she has chosen to forgo them to focus on the World Cup. We will provide her with a scholarship for any course she wishes to pursue after her national exams.

There’s no doubt about her talent, but I believe she needs to secure her future through education. At Zetech, she will have the opportunity to pursue a degree of her choice, which will help her after her football career ends. It’s important to have a backup plan.”

Two weeks ago, Marion announced that she would skip the KCSE examinations to represent the Junior Starlets at the World Cup.

Meanwhile, Coach Kitolo has organized a one-week trial at Ruiru grounds to scout for young talents to strengthen the squad ahead of the upcoming season.
