Flooding in Sudan’s eastern Kassala province has exacerbated the challenges faced by displaced people seeking refuge there.
In the Industrial School area, one of Kassala’s largest displacement camps, residents are desperately seeking assistance. Ali Abdul Jabbar, an internally displaced man from Sennar, described the dire conditions:
“We arrived from Sennar and have been staying in the Industrial School area for 20 days. The rain and flooding are severe. We are waiting for our accommodations to be repaired so we can move there. The current situation is evident. We urge the authorities to address this issue promptly.”
Merwan Abood, another displaced person from Sennar province, emphasized the urgent need for help, describing the situation as critical and devastating.
“I appeal to all compassionate individuals in Kassala, across Sudan, and beyond to assist those in need with essential supplies like equipment, shelter, blankets, clothing, and medicine.”
In Kassala, people waded through knee-deep floodwater, holding onto their belongings. Many sought dry ground after abandoning partially submerged tents.
According to the Sudanese Ministry of Health, at least 12 people have died in eastern Sudan since the flooding began on Saturday, leaving homes and tents inundated.
Sudan has been in turmoil since April of last year when long-standing tensions between the military and the RSF erupted into violent clashes in Khartoum and other parts of the country. The U.N. reports that over 14,000 people have died and 33,000 have been injured, though activists believe the actual numbers may be higher.
This conflict has caused the largest displacement crisis globally, with more than 11 million people forced from their homes.
