Detectives are investigating the discovery of a 24-year-old man’s body in a dam in Kangemi, Nairobi. Simon Owino, who had been missing since July 26, was found in the dam on July 30 by local residents. Owino lived in the area, and his father had reported him missing.
The body was floating in the dam when divers recovered it. Owino’s father was present at the scene and identified the body.
Local residents expressed frustration over the slow police response by removing the body from the water and bringing it to Waiyaki Way, blocking traffic in the process. They demanded a police vehicle to transport the body to the mortuary and called for an investigation into Owino’s death.
A police vehicle was eventually dispatched to move the body, and anti-riot police were deployed to clear the area and restore traffic flow.
The cause of death is currently unknown, and the investigation is ongoing. Locals suspect that Owino may have been targeted due to his association with recent anti-government protests.
The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights has reported an increase in cases of abductions and missing persons, rising from 59 to 66, while arrests have surged from 682 to 1,376. Authorities are continuing to pursue individuals believed to be involved in the protests.
In light of ongoing tensions, further protests are scheduled for August 8 as demonstrators push for changes and address their demands. President William Ruto has urged criminal justice agencies to ensure that those wrongfully caught up in the protests are released and their charges withdrawn, allowing resources to focus on serious criminal elements exploiting the unrest.
