Tunisia’s election commission announced on Monday that candidates can now submit their documents for the upcoming presidential election on October 6. The submission period will remain open until August 6.
Candidates must provide a list of their endorsers in both paper and electronic formats, detailing comprehensive information about each endorser. Those representing political parties must have their candidacy forms signed by the party’s legal representative. These stringent requirements are intended to ensure transparency and integrity in the election process.
In recent weeks, several leading opposition figures have either been arrested or withdrawn their candidacies. Incumbent President Kais Saied is widely expected to run for re-election. Saied, who dismissed parliament in 2021 and faced widespread condemnation, later oversaw the drafting of a new constitution that expanded presidential powers while reducing parliament’s oversight role. He defended his actions as necessary to combat corruption.
