The Kenyan government has outlined why former Prime Minister Raila Odinga is the ideal candidate for the chairmanship of the African Union Commission (AUC). In a statement following Raila’s formal bid submission, the State Department for Foreign Affairs highlighted his Pan-Africanist credentials, extensive networks across Africa, and proven leadership capabilities as key reasons for his suitability.
The government emphasized Africa’s vast untapped human and natural resources, noting that the continent needs a visionary and catalytic leader to unlock this potential. “Raila Odinga’s distinguished life and career make him exceptionally qualified to lead the AUC in driving Africa’s transformation and realizing Agenda 2063,” the statement read.
The State Department also pointed out Raila’s previous work in addressing critical challenges facing the continent, including African integration and infrastructure development, economic transformation, and boosting intra-African trade. His policy initiatives have also tackled financial independence, gender equity, agricultural transformation, climate action, peace and security, and youth empowerment.
The government praised Raila’s visionary, transformational, and action-oriented leadership style, which is expected to accelerate the implementation of Agenda 2063’s goals and flagship programs. “Odinga aims to harness Africa’s abundant resources to usher in a new era of shared prosperity and deliver on the priorities of the African people,” the statement added.
Raila is also recognized for his strong advocacy for African unity, intra-African trade, integration, and infrastructure connectivity. With the AUC’s candidacy submission deadline set for August 6, Kenya is working swiftly to officially nominate Raila, following a missed June 30 deadline due to recent protests in the country.
