Former Isiolo South Member of Parliament Abdi Tepo has been charged with five criminal counts. He has pleaded not guilty to being in possession of forged banknotes.
The prosecution informed the court that Tepo was found with 300 pieces of paper designed to resemble and pass as special paper used in making Euro currency notes. He also faces charges for being in possession of ammunition without a certificate and possessing a firearm without a certificate.
Tepo was released on a cash bail of Ksh. 100,000 and required to provide one contact person. The case is scheduled for a pretrial mention on August 12, 2024.
Tepo and his wife, Halima Gura Roka, were arrested by Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) officers on July 25, 2024. The EACC was investigating fraudulent payments amounting to Ksh. 199 million made to Beirut Pharmacy and Medical Centre in Eastleigh by the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) between 2021 and 2023.
As part of the investigation, EACC conducted searches at the residences of Beirut directors Yussuf Maalim Haret, Mohamed Bare Abdille, Virginia Nduku Ngemu, Ubah Hussein Abdi, and Beirut Hospital Administrator Oscar Mburu Murigi.
When EACC detectives arrived at Tepo’s residence, he reportedly cocked and readied his Ceska handgun but later allowed them access to the premises.
