All candidates vying for the FKF President’s position can officially start their campaigns now that FKF president Nick Mwendwa has assured football stakeholders that the long-awaited elections will take place between October and November this year.
During the FKF Awards Gala last week, Mwendwa announced that the court cases that had stalled the election process have been resolved, and everything is set for the FKF polls.
“If you want to continue the excellent work done by the gentlemen at FKF, begin preparing your documents, and let’s meet at the ballot in October or November. The court cases that hindered the process are behind us,” Mwendwa stated.
The FKF AGM had been postponed due to a court order from the Mombasa High Court on March 15, 2024, instigated by coast region NEC member Gabriel Mghendi. This order led sports journalist Milton Nyakundi to file a petition, claiming that the NEC could not hold an AGM until the ruling was resolved. However, the case was ultimately dismissed and withdrawn two weeks ago.
Mwendwa also announced that a Special General Meeting (SGM) will take place in August to approve the electoral board and set the stage for the elections.
His remarks followed a request from the recently dismissed Sports CS Ababu Namwamba, who urged the federation to expedite the election process.
Mwendwa expressed pride in securing funds for the awards gala, which returned after three years, and in ensuring that the Emerging Starlets made history by being the first Kenyan football team to qualify for the World Cup.
“We provided all KPL teams with Sh10 million for the KBC and Azam TV rights, but no one mentions that. Soon, we will ensure all matches are broadcast live on television,” he remarked.
Meanwhile, Ababu, who attended the gala as a guest, urged the federation to expedite the election process.
“My final message to the entire FKF community is that you are sitting on a diamond mine. Make sure the minor issue of elections is resolved. Create a transparent environment and manage football effectively to make Kenyan football the envy of the region,” Ababu stated.
