Dr. Purity Ngina has officially taken on her role as the new Secretary and CEO of the National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC) following her swearing-in ceremony on Monday.
Ngina was administered the oath of office at the Supreme Court by Chief Registrar of the Judiciary, Winfridah Mokaya, in a ceremony overseen by Chief Justice Martha Koome.
Chief Justice Koome praised the Commission for appointing Ngina as its new chief executive, highlighting it as a sign of the country’s growing recognition of the talents and capabilities of young people. “As someone who believes in the potential of youth, I am thrilled that the Commission has chosen a young and capable individual to lead its initiatives,” the Chief Justice remarked.
The NGEC, established under the National Gender and Equality Commission Act of 2011 and pursuant to Article 59 (4) of the Constitution, focuses on special interest groups, including women, youth, persons with disabilities, children, the elderly, minorities, and marginalized groups.
Koome emphasized that the Commission is constitutionally tasked with promoting an inclusive society that values the contributions and rights of all its citizens. She urged Dr. Ngina to seize this opportunity to become a strong advocate for the voiceless and a champion for the rights of the vulnerable and marginalized.
Dr. Ngina gained recognition as the youngest person to earn a Ph.D. in Biomathematics from Strathmore University in 2018 at the age of 28. She previously served as the Regional Manager of Research and Assessment at Zizi Afrique Foundation and was a lecturer at Strathmore University, where she taught Financial Engineering, Financial Economics, and Actuarial Science.
