Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has dismissed claims that a motorist was arrested and his vehicle impounded for blocking his motorcade.
The denial comes after a media report suggested that the motorist had filed a lawsuit against the county, alleging that his vehicle was seized for obstructing the governor’s convoy. Sakaja clarified that the vehicle was actually impounded following a complaint lodged with county authorities.
He shared a video in which the complainant raised concerns about a motorist driving on the wrong side of the road. In the footage, recorded by another driver, two buses are seen traveling inappropriately.
“A member of the public shared this video. That’s the vehicle that was impounded and charged,” Sakaja stated on X. His clarification prompted some Kenyans to praise the county’s action.
John Boog commented, “How powerful are these matatu drivers and owners risking lives and breaking traffic rules just to make money?”
Geoffrey Tanui added, “The motorist should be held accountable. He was clearly obstructing the governor intentionally.”
According to Section 53(1) and 67 of the Traffic Act, it is an offense to obstruct or inconvenience other motorists by improperly positioning a vehicle on the road, with a penalty of Sh10,000.
