Two women are now urgently seeking justice and the arrest of an Indian national who shot them and left them for dead in Laikipia a month ago, leaving them with serious injuries and bullets still lodged in their bodies.
Daphne Karwitha and Penina Kinoti recounted to Citizen Digital that they were shot while leaving a cricket tournament in Laikipia on Saturday, June 22. They were with a mutual friend, who is reportedly dating the suspected shooter.
During an after-tournament party, Karwitha witnessed a confrontation between the suspect and two women she had shared a taxi with. One of these women is said to be in a relationship with the suspect.
“We were a group of five women who had gone to watch a cricket match at Ol Pejeta and traveled in a taxi,” Karwitha told Citizen Digital. “At the party, I saw some of the women arguing with the man who would later shoot us.”
According to the women, as they were heading home from the tournament, the suspect sped past them, made a sudden U-turn, and stopped near their taxi. He then fired shots, targeting his girlfriend and injuring two other women. One woman suffered severe abdominal injuries, while the other still has a bullet lodged in her back.
Lawyers Lucy Kaaria and Onayo Mbele, who are representing the victims, have expressed frustration over the lack of action against the suspect, despite their identification of him. They have requested the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to intervene.
In a letter to the DPP, the lawyers stated, “Our client was unlawfully shot by Yagnik Jagiblue on June 22, 2024, in the Ol Pejeta area. She sustained severe injuries and required surgery and treatment at Nanyuki General Hospital.”
The incident was reported at Nanyuki Police Station, with an OB No. 08/22/6/24 issued. However, the lawyers allege that the suspect, still at large, has threatened the victims both directly and through intermediaries, demanding that they withdraw their complaint or face further harm.
“Despite the incident occurring over a month ago, no action has been taken by the police or the DCI to charge the suspect,” the letter to the DPP reads. “The suspect has threatened the clients, insisting they drop the charges or suffer consequences.”
The legal team has requested the DPP to retrieve the case file from the police, citing delays and frustrations in their attempts to proceed. They reported that during a court appearance on July 22, 2024, where they expected the suspect to enter a plea, they were informed that the suspect was unavailable and the case file was not ready.
“The victims were told by the investigating officer that the suspect would be arraigned at Nanyuki Law Courts on July 22, 2024, but upon their arrival, they were informed that the suspect was not present and the file was still incomplete,” the letter concludes.
