Senior Counsel Ahmednasir Abdullahi has stated that President William Ruto has a crucial opportunity to appoint individuals with outstanding integrity to his new Cabinet.
His comments come as President Ruto is set to announce his new Cabinet at State House, following the dismissal of the previous office holders on July 11, with the exception of Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.
Speaking on Spice FM, Ahmednasir emphasized that this is a chance for Ruto to rejuvenate his administration by carefully selecting qualified candidates for the various ministerial positions.
“President Ruto has a prime opportunity here. His administration faced significant challenges and was nearly toppled by the youth who protested, expressing genuine concerns for a better Kenya,” he said.
“A Kenya that listens to them and delivers on their needs. The President’s task in reconstituting his Cabinet is to address these issues,” he added.
On Wednesday, Ruto officially announced the dismissal of his Cabinet and outlined the reasons behind this drastic measure. He mentioned that he had taken time to reflect and listen to Kenyans, particularly in response to the mass protests led by the younger generation.
Ruto also stated that the Cabinet review was aimed at enhancing efficiency, effectiveness, transparency, and accountability in public service delivery.
Ahmednasir believes that Ruto now has the chance to appoint capable and qualified individuals to better support the government’s implementation of the Bottom Up Economic Transformation Agenda, as noted in the gazette notice.
“I hear he intends to form a broad-based government, which is beneficial for the country. The outcome is what matters most, not the process,” he said.
He stressed that reappointing any of the former Cabinet Secretaries would be inconsistent with the reasons given for their dismissal.
“The President has provided well-reasoned explanations for their dismissal—issues of governance, transparency, and accountability. If he dismissed them for these reasons, he cannot reappoint them,” he said.
Ahmednasir expressed confidence that the President would make the right choices and ensure that only individuals of integrity are appointed.
“This is the President’s second chance. If he doesn’t get it right this time, it will suggest that the fundamental problem lies with him,” he said.
He acknowledged that there is likely significant lobbying by those seeking to retain their positions, but urged the President to focus on what serves the best interests of his government and the people of Kenya.
“He needs to prioritize his government and its effectiveness over any personal or political pressures. It’s clear what Kenyans want, and we all understand those needs.”
Ruto is expected to address the nation at 4 pm from State House, where he is anticipated to unveil his new Cabinet.
