Global Compact Network Kenya has recognized Yvonne Kirigo, Strategy and Innovation Manager at MP Shah Hospital, and Kevin Getobai, Farm Project Manager at Ololo Farm, for their pioneering efforts in transformative change within their businesses and communities.
In a press release by Global Compact Network Kenya’s Communications Manager, Zak Irungu, it was announced that Kirigo and Getobai triumphed over 27 other candidates to win in their respective categories: Large National and Multinational Enterprises, and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs).
Kirigo was praised for her leadership and advocacy for energy efficiency, renewable energy solutions, and water efficiency initiatives at MP Shah Hospital. Her efforts have significantly reduced the hospital’s environmental footprint by promoting sustainable resource use.
Getobai’s innovative integration of sustainable agriculture principles and eco-friendly practices was also highlighted. His introduction of Black Soldier Flies to expedite the composting process of organic waste from six months to 14 days enabled the farm to save up to 47.5 tonnes of CO2 equivalence.
“We celebrate these two Country SDG Pioneers and business leaders for driving transformative change within their organizations and communities. Their commitment to the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact exemplifies the spirit of innovation and resilience needed to advance the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Their work will inspire other participants in building a sustainable future for all,” the statement read.
Kirigo and Getobai will now compete on the global stage with other candidates for the title of 2024 United Nations Global Compact SDG Pioneers. The winners will be announced in September during the UN General Assembly week in New York.
“The SDG Pioneers programme recognizes dedicated professionals driving and innovating solutions through new technologies, initiatives, and business models that can help us reach the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. We hope their work will inspire others to advance the Global Goals by implementing our Ten Principles on human rights, labor, environment, and anti-corruption,” said Sanda Ojiambo, CEO & Executive Director of the UN Global Compact.
