Kenyan rapper Mejja disclosed that his mother’s illness affected his plans to continue his education. In an interview with Kameme, he explained:
He had originally aspired to be an archaeologist. However, after high school, his mother’s health issues emerged. She developed a brain tumor, which took a year to diagnose, causing her to lose her memory. During this time, his grandmother, who had been very supportive, also passed away.
Mejja noted that his family follows Islam, and while his brothers are more religious, he was not particularly involved in religion.
He also discussed how being overweight in his youth affected his self-esteem. He was hesitant to share his passion for rap or approach girls due to constant teasing about his weight. His confidence grew in high school, and he eventually learned to stand up to his body shamers.
He suggested that schools should offer classes to help students accept themselves and build self-esteem, as it could improve social interactions. Mejja found solace in playing basketball, which provided a refuge from bullying.
