Marseille have signed forward Mason Greenwood from Manchester United on a contract extending until 2029, in a deal valued up to 31.6 million euros (£26.6 million).
Greenwood, 22, who came through United’s academy, hasn’t played for the Premier League team since January 2022 and spent last season on loan at Getafe.
Charges against him, including attempted rape and assault, were dropped in February 2023. The move was met with criticism from the Marseille mayor following its announcement.
Greenwood made his senior debut for United in 2019 as a substitute in a Champions League match against Paris Saint-Germain. He scored 35 goals in 129 appearances and earned one England cap in 2020.
In August 2023, Manchester United and Greenwood parted ways by mutual consent after a six-month internal review. Greenwood then joined Getafe, where he scored 10 goals and provided six assists in 36 appearances, helping to revive his career.
United, who wished Greenwood well on their website, have also secured a significant sell-on clause in the deal with Marseille.
Marseille will play Sunderland in a pre-season friendly on August 3 at Bradford City’s Valley Parade due to renovation work at the Stadium of Light. Born in Bradford, this could be Greenwood’s first game in England since his arrest in January 2022 related to online allegations.
