The Azimio la Umoja One Kenya coalition has made it clear that it will not join the broad-based government President William Ruto plans to announce.
In a press conference on Friday, Azimio principal Kalonzo Musyoka stated that joining the proposed government of national unity would be a betrayal, especially to Gen Z and millennials who have sacrificed significantly.
“We will not participate in or support the proposed Kenya Kwanza-led broad-based government of national unity. This would be a betrayal of the Kenyan people, particularly Gen Z and millennials who have paid the ultimate price,” Kalonzo said.
He emphasized that the coalition’s stance is clear: they will always support the people of Kenya over the Kenya Kwanza regime. Kalonzo argued that the upcoming Cabinet reshuffle and new appointments would be merely cosmetic changes.
“As long as the Kenya Kwanza regime remains in place, absolutely nothing will change,” he asserted.
Kalonzo made these comments at the Kenya School of Government, where he attended the Pan African Youth Convention alongside other Azimio leaders. He noted that the decision to reject the proposed unity government was made by the Wiper Democratic Movement, Jubilee Party, DAP-Kenya Party, Party of National Unity (PNU), and Narc-Kenya during their National Executive Council (NEC) meetings.
He also mentioned that ODM held their parliamentary group meeting at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation.
His remarks come amid reports of discord within the opposition coalition, with suggestions that ODM leader Raila Odinga might be open to joining the national unity government. Kalonzo refuted these reports, stating, “Azimio is united,” and added that any participation in the proposed government would only be considered if a national convention precedes it.
“If any of our members choose to join the proposed Kenya Kwanza-led broad-based government, they will be doing so in their individual capacities, not as representatives of Azimio,” Kalonzo concluded.
