Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban claimed on Friday that former U.S. President Donald Trump and Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico were targeted due to their “anti-war views.” Fico survived an assassination attempt in May, while Trump, the Republican nominee for the November election, narrowly escaped a shooting on July 13. Both leaders are allies of Orban, who has been in power since 2010.
In an interview with state-owned Kossuth radio, Orban suggested that these attacks were orchestrated by pro-war forces aiming to eliminate voices advocating for peace. He praised Trump for surviving the attack, attributing it to a divine plan to further peace efforts. Orban’s Foreign Minister, Peter Szijjarto, has described a potential second term for Trump as a “chance for peace” in Ukraine.
Orban also detailed a recent meeting with Trump in Florida on July 11, where they discussed various issues, including economics. Orban noted that his team is helping Trump’s advisors with policy development, particularly on topics like family policy and migration, areas where Hungary’s perspectives are valued.
