Who was civilised first. The Africans or Europeans?

The question of whether Africans were “civilized” before Europeans is complex and depends on how we define and interpret the concept of civilization. Here are some key points to consider:

  1. Definitions of Civilization: The concept of civilization often includes aspects such as advanced social organization, urban development, complex institutions (like government and religion), technological advancements, and cultural achievements (like art, literature, and philosophy). Different civilizations around the world developed these traits at different times and in different ways.
  2. Early African Civilizations: Africa is home to some of the oldest known civilizations in human history. Ancient Egypt, for example, flourished along the Nile River as early as 3100 BCE, creating monumental architecture, advanced agricultural techniques, a sophisticated writing system (hieroglyphics), and complex religious beliefs.
  3. Sub-Saharan African Civilizations: Sub-Saharan Africa also had numerous civilizations and cultural developments. Great civilizations like the Kingdom of Kush, the Kingdom of Axum, the Ghana Empire, the Mali Empire, and the Kingdom of Zimbabwe (among others) emerged over centuries. These civilizations often had advanced trading networks, political structures, and cultural achievements.
  4. European Civilizations: In Europe, civilizations such as ancient Greece and Rome are often highlighted for their contributions to Western civilization. These civilizations made significant advancements in philosophy, governance, engineering, and art, influencing later European and global cultures.
  5. Comparative Development: It’s essential to avoid a linear or hierarchical view of civilization development. Different regions and cultures developed their own forms of civilization independently, often influencing each other through trade, migration, and cultural exchange.
  6. Colonial Narratives: Historically, European colonial powers often portrayed African societies as primitive or uncivilized, which perpetuated stereotypes and misconceptions. However, archaeological and historical research continues to uncover the rich cultural and technological achievements of African civilizations.

In conclusion, African civilizations had achieved significant advancements in various aspects of human development long before European contact. The notion of civilization is diverse and encompasses a range of social, technological, and cultural achievements that were present in both African and European societies at different points in history.
