Coach Robert Matano has departed Tusker FC after his six-year contract at Ruaraka came to an end. His decision was influenced by the management’s refusal to approve his preferred player budget. Known for his uncompromising style, Matano famously challenged the club to dismiss him when faced with an ultimatum to improve results, notably before a critical match against champions Gor Mahia last season.
“I don’t bow to threats, I don’t operate under ultimatums, and I’m not afraid of being fired. What will they do if I choose to leave before the match?” Matano defiantly responded to club CEO Dennis Nzau.
Despite a 1-0 loss to Gor Mahia on October 22, 2023, extending a poor run of three defeats, two wins, and two draws in seven matches, Nzau refrained from taking action against Matano, who ultimately secured a second-place finish, eight points behind Gor Mahia.
Known as ‘The Lion’ in football circles, Matano leaves behind a legacy rivaling only veteran coach Jacob “Ghost” Mulee’s achievements with the club. Mulee, who claimed two Kenyan Premier League titles in 2000 and 2007, along with the regional Cecafa tournament title in 2001, stands alongside Matano and Sammy “Pamzo” Omolo as the only local managers to disrupt Gor Mahia’s dominance over the past 12 years, ensuring the league title wasn’t monopolized by one team. Matano’s tenure included clinching the title in 2012, following Pamzo’s 2011 success, and adding the Top 8 Trophy to his accolades in 2013.
