Billionaire Elon Musk has announced plans to relocate the headquarters of SpaceX and his social media company, X, from California to Texas. SpaceX will move from Hawthorne to Starbase in Texas, while X will transition from San Francisco to Austin.
Musk cited a new California law signed by Governor Gavin Newsom as the “final straw” for the decision. The law prevents school districts from requiring staff to inform parents about their child’s gender identity changes.
“A year ago, I made it clear to Governor Newsom that laws like this would force families and businesses to leave California to protect their children’s safety,” Musk stated. He also confirmed his own move from California to Texas, which has no personal income tax.
In 2021, Tesla, under Musk’s leadership, relocated its corporate headquarters from Palo Alto, California, to Austin, Texas.
SpaceX’s operations include constructing and launching its Starship rockets from the Starbase site at Boca Chica Beach in southern Texas, near the Mexican border. Additionally, SpaceX launches its smaller Falcon 9 rockets from Cape Canaveral, Florida, and Southern California.
