Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, the former Arsenal striker, announced on Wednesday that he is leaving Marseille after a single season, with Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood reportedly set to replace him at the French club.
Aubameyang, the 35-year-old Gabonese forward, joined Marseille from Chelsea last July and netted 30 goals during his time there.
According to various media reports, Greenwood, the English forward who had faced charges including rape and assault that were dropped in February 2023, is being targeted by Marseille.
“It’s time for me to begin a new chapter,” Aubameyang stated on Instagram. “I have always followed my father’s advice, which has helped shape the player I am today, and we have made this decision for the next phase of my career. I’ve experienced a year filled with emotions, and I thank the club, the staff, my teammates, and our fans,” he added.
Greenwood had been suspended by Manchester United since January 2022 following the allegations, but prosecutors dropped the charges last year after key witnesses withdrew and new evidence emerged.
The 22-year-old spent the last season on loan at Spanish side Getafe, where he scored 10 goals in 36 appearances.
Greenwood had been earmarked for stardom at United after progressing through the youth ranks at Old Trafford, amassing 35 goals in 129 senior appearances for the club.
