8 reasons that may lead to impeachment of a governor in Kenya

Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza is undergoing her third impeachment trial after the County Assembly Majority Leader initiated a motion for her removal.

This marks the third attempt to oust the first-term governor.

The impeachment motion was presented in the House on Wednesday by Meru County Assembly Deputy Majority Leader Zipporah Kinya.

The Ward Representatives seeking Mwangaza’s ouster have brought three charges against her.

Discussing the grounds for impeachment, here are some reasons why a governor might face impeachment:

  1. Abuse of Office
  • Personal Gain: Using the office to benefit oneself, family, or friends, such as awarding contracts or jobs in exchange for favors.
  • Overstepping Authority: Making decisions or taking actions that exceed the governor’s legal powers.
  1. Gross Misconduct
  • Criminal Activity: Engaging in illegal activities such as theft, assault, or other criminal behavior.
  • Ethical Violations: Conduct that breaches the ethical standards expected of a public official, such as inappropriate relationships or harassment.

  • Bribery: Accepting money or gifts in exchange for political favors or decisions.
  • Fraud: Engaging in deceptive practices that result in financial gain at the expense of the public or government.
  • Embezzlement: Misappropriating funds for personal use.
  1. Violation of the Constitution
  • Ignoring Constitutional Limits: Enacting policies or actions that contravene constitutional provisions.
  • Rights Violations: Infringing on the rights and freedoms guaranteed to citizens under the constitution.

  • Poor Performance: Failing to deliver on key responsibilities, such as managing public services, infrastructure, or finances.
