US intelligence officials have discovered evidence suggesting that Iran was plotting against former President Donald Trump, according to CBS News. However, there is no evidence linking this plot to Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old shooter who attempted to assassinate Trump, nor have any foreign or domestic accomplices of Crooks been identified. Upon learning of the threat, the National Security Council contacted the Secret Service.
In response, the Secret Service enhanced Trump’s protection in June by deploying additional resources, including counter-sniper teams, Counter Assault Teams, robotic dogs, and drones.
CBS News reports that the extent of the Iranian plot detected remains unclear. Iran’s hostility towards Trump is not new, particularly after the 2020 airstrike that killed Iranian commander Gen. Qasem Soleimani.
Adrienne Watson, a spokesperson for the National Security Council, noted that Iranian threats against Trump administration officials have been monitored for years, driven by Iran’s desire for revenge. The NSC considers these threats a top national security priority.
The Secret Service declined to comment on specific threats but emphasized that they take all threats seriously and adjust their resources as needed. Spokesman Anthony Guglielmi stated that the Secret Service and other agencies continually assess and respond to new threat information.
This report emerged during the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, with Trump making his first public appearance since the incident on July 15, wearing a bandage on his right ear and formally announcing Ohio Senator JD Vance as his running mate.
